Engine Not Turning Over

Right now my 55 cranks but wont turn over. I checked both coil packs with a spark plug tester that seem to light up the bulb fine.

I ordered another coil from a marina, tried replacing it and still will not turn over, figured what the heck can always have a space coil pack.

Oddly the new coil pack got really got, made white smoke and even leaked.

I checked positive is on positive and negative on negative.

When I put my old one back in it also get very hot when trying to turn over my engine, it's been 30 minuets and it's still very warm to touch.

Any suggestions on diagnosis would be awesome.

I melted the first 60 bucks I threw at it maybe the next try will be cheaper.

If it cranks over and there is sparks in both spark plugs, then the problem will be either lack of compression or lack of fuel. To test for fuel, get a small or quart size spray bottle and fill it half way with a fuel oil mix. Remove the air cover off the carbs and then have someone start the engine while spraying fuel oil mix into the carb. If the motor starts or even try to "cough" you have a fuel delivery or carburetion problem. If the motor doesn't "cough" at all, then do a compression test first and post your readings.

Do as jiggz suggest if it does not turn over/cough, check the flywheel key.
It can be shared, you will get spark BUT at the wrong time.

The coil will be warm if you have not turn of the ignition. This is because of the points is closed and there will flow current through the points and the coil.
It is important to turn of the ignition when you are not running the engine. Otherwise the coil will be warm and crack.

Before I moved forward I was hoping to find wiring for "559bc 55hp 1971 outboard wiring schematics "

I'd like to confirm I don't have wires crossed, but I doubt I do seeing I ran it last season and I've changed nothing,

If the ignition is turned on will it it heat the coils to the point where you cannot touch them?

At one point one coil even melted out some liquid that turned back to plastic once cooled

Hi guys, I did compression test, I got 148 - 150 on both cylinders which is amazing I believe.

We spray gas in the carb like mentioned and it's back firing.

At this point are the points off causing it to backfire and messing up the timing for TDC and combustion?

Looks like we have both a points issue and a fuel issue?

If it only back fires when you spray fuel oil mix then first you need to resolve the fuel delivery or carburetion problem. On its own without spraying fuel oil mix into the carb, the motor should back fire (need to define this) if there is fuel getting into the cylinder. Now the final question, is it a "backfire" or a single firing of a cylinder? You can tell if it is a backfire by looking at the carb. If it back fires exhaust or pressured air will blow out of the carbs. If it doesn't then it is not backfiring. A single firing of a cylinder may sound like a backfire but it is not if the exhaust goes out the exhaust snout or prop shaft where it is supposed to.

So do the fuel oil spray test again and this time pay attention to the carbs. Again, if it only fires when you do the fuel spray test, then there is definitely a fuel delivery or carburetion problem. Check make sure the float or needle in the carb is not stuck close. Unless, you worked around with the points or flywheel or stator, timing should have stayed the same. To me it sounds like a fuel problem.

Hi Jiggz yes I can make it backfire without spraying fuel so we are getting fuel. Ive got the back fire down a little playing with points, it wants to turn over and even chugs a bit now... I guess at this point because I have spark, good compression and fuel it's left to setting the points properly

Hi guys I want to say thanks so much for all the help. I have set the points and it was still having issues. I checked the plugs again with the tester. it was lighting up, i decided forget it, I'm getting new plugs. Don't ever trust a spark plug tester for quality of spark lol. Soon as I added new plugs she lite up. I'm ready for fishing season!
