I am wondering if it would be a bad thing to use sythetic oil. The oil cap states use 10w30 oil and I know there are marine oils suggested as well but knowing the benefits of a full sythetic oil (better for the engine and runs cooler in cars) I am wondering if anyone in the know would say this is a bad thing?

suggests for the best oil to use if not would be helpful

Thanks

I would love to do that - however I just purchased the boat used and did not get a manual with it - I am doing the change tomorrow and was just wondering if anyone knew first hand

I have an '84 Sea Ray work boat on the docks that has the same powerplant, and I have run nothing but Penzoil SAE 30 since new. It has over 2000 hours on it and has never had a major problem. IMO multi grade and synthetics won't benefit you in any way with an inline 4 used in a marine environment. Stick to the straight 30 weight.

I am guessing that your original oil cap was replaced with an automotive one...pretty certain that Mercruiser never called for 10w30 in any of their 3.0 engines.

You should be following the Mercruiser chart linked to in the above post...this chart takes into account all the oil improvements that have followed since your engine was built.

Here is the chart, again:
