I have 2 very newbie questions. About to change the engine oil on 1988 OMC 5.0L.

Question 1 - is SAE 30 the correct oil weight? Other suggestions for oil to use on an older engine? Engine most likely has some worn rings.

Question 2 - is this where the oil is added - see photo. Do you split the amount of oil added and pour half into port side and the other half into the starboard side? (I plan to use pump to extract old oil through dipstick tube. Wasn't sure if oil gets added back there or through "the filler port cap" as noted in the service manual. )

Thanks for patience on such a newbie question.

Some use 15w40 if, some SAE30.
Try both and see if it burns oil and use what works better.

I recommend rotella 15w40. Its $13 a gallon, has the zinc you need for a flat tappet cam and available nearly everywhere
