Same 1986 mercruiser 190 4cyl. What oil should I go with? I know I don't have to use Quicksilver but I figure I should use single weight (straight) 30 or 40. Also is there an easy way to figure out what oil filter crosses over to say Fram or similiar. I hadn't priced a "Merc." filter but I figure it must be more economical to get them at elsewhere. Also is there a kit to remote mount the oil filter? Its gonna be a pain in the butt to get at it, looks like if I remove the coolant overflow tank I can get my hand in to reach the filter.

You should be able to find a replacement filter in the Wix brand. They also offer a remote filter kit. You just have to find the nearest dealer and have them look in the catalog for the crossover for your engine.

Re: Engine oil & filter??

I'd stick with a genuine quicksilver or Merc filter.Frams are ok, but why take a chance on a cheap filter.

As far as the oil goes why not spend a little extra and get a good full or synthetic/blend 10-W30, you won't regret it.

I went with Mobil 1 tri-synthetic 10-W30 for my 4 stroke 90.

There are lots of useful tools for engine maintenance. Go visit a merc dealer they'll help you out.
I use the Boa Constrictor tool to remove my oil filter...works well.
