I?m trying to maintain the proper engine oil level in my 1982 Mercruiser MCM120 engine. For example with a cold engine and the dipstick in the tube for some time (over night) removing the dipstick and reading the oil level will give me a full reading if I then wipe it clean and reinsert the dipstick and leave it in the tube for let?s say 5 seconds and remove it and take another reading it will read about 3/4 inch lower on the stick about on the add line. Now if I leave the dipstick in the tube for about 15 minutes and take another reading it would be back up to full. I also get similar readings if the engine and oil have been brought up to temperature and time has been allowed for the oil to drain back into the pan. I would assume the inconstancies are due to the dipstick tube extended to the bottom of the pan in a marine engine.
I am wondering if anyone else might have had wierd readings like I described?
