My first time winterizing my boat (1st year of ownership). It is a '95 Wellcraft with a 5.7l Mercruiser with Alpha1 Gen 2 drive. I am curious as to what weight oil is recommended for Upstate New York. Also, can I go straight synthetic?

Thanks.

Re: Engine Oil Weight/First Time Winterizing

Check your manual, Mercruizer reccomends 25W40 or it maybe stamped on your dipstick. I have a 350 Mag, 5.7L mercruizer and I use quicksilver 25W40, Michigan

Just a good grade detergent automotive oil SAE 30 or SAE 40 with API class SE or SF is fine, you don't need a multi-viscosity oil....Mercruiser actually used to recommend against mutli viscosity use. Go to Napa or Walmart and buy your favorite flavor along with an oil filter. More importantly make sure you drain all the water out of the engine properly, use a fuel stabilizer, and fog it. Use the pink non-toxic RV anti freeze in the engine if you want, but it's not absolutely necessary.
