First the details on the boat. 1987 21' Searay. 5.7L Mercuiser with an Alpha 1 outdrive. Outdrive was replaced last summer with a warranty.

We were on the lake Saturday. Boat ran great for a couple of hours while we wake boarded and skied. We then hooked up a tube and pulled the little kids at a slow constant speed. All was well for 10+ minutes of this then all the sudden we heard a loud sound from the engine/outdrive area. We immediately shifted into nuetral and the boat died. We were in the middle of the lake, so I know we did not hit anything. We turned it over and it soulded like the knocking sould was coming from the engine. After the tow back to the dock, we got home and turned it over one more time. With the boat out of the water, it sounded like the sound was from the outdrive. It's probably impossible to diagnose with this limited information, but any ideas what this could be? The engine was not hot, oil was full and clean. I hope it was the outdrive as it should be covered under warranty. Any ideas?

Pull the outdrive and try cranking it over and see if the noise is there or not.

Who knows, when you pull the outdrive you may even see what happened if it was a ujoint problem.

oil was full and clean.
Ayuh,... Does the motor, 'n the drive Still have oil in 'em,..??
Is there any crud or water in either of 'em,..??

Like Don said, Pull the drive, 'n crank it...
If it still knocks, it's the motor...
If it don't, you've already got the drive off, get 'er fixed...
