Engine overheating

Just after my friend purchased a 1990 Bayliner 3785 with inboards, one of the motors overheated. It has a closed cooling system, so I'm wondering where the pump for the water is. Do these have a water pump like a car, or some other type of impeller somewhere else, and how hard is it to check or replace it? Thanks, Steve

Hi slarson. The water pump assembly is on the front of the engine, and has an impeller just like an outboard (believe the pump circulates both the raw water for cooling the manifolds and the water through the block via the closed cooling system.) A service manual for the engine should provide step by step instructions, as replacing the pump impeller is considered a routine procedure. Your friend would want to check first to see if there is something else going on -- something obvious, like the raw water intake valve closed or partially closed or blocked.
