Hello all,

I’m new to the boats. My father yesterday tried to start engine first time after winter.
Boat was winterized by the way.
He told me that he connected water hose and he forgot to put engine in tilt down position.
He cranked it – it made a sound like it started and died right away.
Now we can hear only clicks from distributor.
I didn’t check solenoid or started yet. I read somewhere on the forum that you can turn engine with hands – if it turns them engine is not seized. I was unable to turn the
engine with my hands. Does it mean anything? Should I be able to turn engine with hands?

I got Bayliner 1985 5 liter V8.

Thanks

Re: Engine Question

Not much info to go on there Alex, is this a Volvo, OMC, Mercruiser, is it a Ford or Chevy engine?
Are the batteries charged, are all the connections clean and tight?
Pull the spark plugs and try to turn the engine, is there any water coming out of the spark plug holes?

Re: Engine Question

I think it's a Chevy engine. I'm not sure because we got this boat year ago. Battery is fully charged. No corrosion on terminals. I was unable to turn engine with my hands. There is no power on spark plugs.

Thanks

Re: Engine Question

Don said to PULL the plugs, not see if there is power to them. If there is water in the cylinders for some reason it's hydrolocked and water doesn't compress.. If you pull the plugs the engine can push water out. That of course is IF that is your problem. Also it just relieves compression even if there is NO water

You still need to tell us what mfgr your setup is. What is the outdrive?

M

Should I be able to turn engine with hands?
Only if they're firmly wrapped around a Large Wrench.............

And that's with the Spark Plugs Already Removed...........

Re: Engine Question
