engine racing after long run

2001 6.2 mpi B3

Sometimes after a long run the engine wants to idle fast but not all the time
When it is acting up and I go from Neutral to forward or reverse it almost wants to stall
Thinking it might be the IAC valve but not sure
Any body had these symptoms before?

Could be something as simple as the throttle cable getting worn or sticky. Check the adjustment and make sure there is a slight preload to the idle position when you come back to idle.

Ayuh,.... Slight cable pressure against the throttle actuator arm against the idle stop...

assuming that the throttle is not preloading all the time and is due to being sticky
What is the lubricant that you would suggest to use?
I was going to lub it because it can't hurt anyway

You don't lube the cables. The reason it's a little loose is just wear inside the cable. Just adjust a little and it will be fine.

Ran the boat for 8 hrs this weekend.
Not one problem
Checked the loading on the throttle and it did have some pressure against
The stop.
Sooo
I bought a IAC and I am going to keep it on the boat just incase
I also am going to keep the tools to adjust the throttle just incase
I guess I will just have to wait until it happens again and when it does
Open the engine and see what I can find
