engine rebuild underway

hello all its been awhile.so ive got my motor completely tore down and am wondering what the red flaky paint like residue is.do i need to worry about cleaning it out?its in the crankcase.
another thing,why dont the piston and connecting rod part #'s match between my motor and johnsons web site?superceeded?thanks a bunch.
p.s. whats the best way to prep block for paint,cleaning oil and loose paint flakes and such?

The red stuff is probably dry gel seal from the crankcase seam.

You can bead blast(with glass beads) the crankcase but you had better be SURE you have it ALL sealed off...easy to do or have done...should be cheap.
