I have a 1997 120HP Force outboard that decides that it wants to redline on its own. When im back by the engine when its runnning, and manually moving the throttle by hand, i hit a certain rpm and the engine just redlines by itself. I turn off the key and it doesn't shut off, then it shuts off by itself like 30-45 seconds later. The fuel is still running through when it shuts off as well. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Engine redlines on its own

When you say "moving the trottle by hand" have you disconnected the cables? It is not a good idea to do this in neutral as you can overrev the engine.

If it is doing this with the cables connected, then it sounds to me like you need to do a complete stator timing/carb linkage setup. That means disconnecting the carbs and tower linkages and starting from the beginning, adjust them all according to the book. After you have done that, start it up and let us know it does.

You do have a manual don't you?

John
