I have recently acquired a 16ft MFG with a 1971 Johnson 50hp outboard. It was given to me by my brother-in-law. What things should i do with this engine to get it up and running? There is no fuel tank and no battery (what battery should I purchase) also will the carbs etc need cleaning. Help will be deeply appreciated.

Howdy, FishnErie.

Welcome to the Board.

If you have or plan to have any electronics on the boat I suggest a dual purpose (start/deep cycle) marine battery. I have good luck with Everstart Marine batteries from Wal Mart.

You can also pick up a 6 gallon fuel tank with fittings and fuel line for OMC and a set of "muffs" for out of the water cooling while you are there.

Get yourself a Repair Manual. http://www.boatmotors.com/manuals.html

Then replace the water pump impeller and try to start her up.

If she doesn't want to start, check out the "Outboard Wont Start" article in the FAQ section.

Good luck, and keep us up to date on your progress. :)

Re: Engine Rehab

On a 1971 50 hp, I would'nt buy anything until I did a spark, and compression test, and even then pull the cylinder head. That old 50 horse twin was not noted for it's longevity. If you can, borrow a battery for these test's. Then, take it one step at a time

Make sure it shifts, also. The 1971 50 has the older hydro-electric lower unit, but the newer stator-charged powerpack ignition (that is, it's not battery CD). It won't shift until you have a battery hooked up.

Re: Engine Rehab

That hydro-electric drive has to have the engine either spinning over with the starter, or the engine running. It will not shift out of forward at rest.
