If you know your l/u is good, I'd just switch out power heads. Quicker and easier.

c/6

Hooty

Re: engine removal question

I would say just swap entire outboards. Its easier than swapping powerheads in the fact that you are not taking the chance of damaging something swapping powerheads. Its a Merc 200, so its a twenty horse motor I assume, and it doesn't weigh much. I am not a fan of swapping parts here and there unless combining parts from several sources to make a working thing. Here, you can just swap the entire mess, and it it a whole bunch easier to hook up a few cables and wires than unbolting powerheads, trying to find or make gaskets, and all that, and it takes a lot less time as well. Now, if its a 200 horse Merc, than it may be easier to swap powerheads only, but from experience I can tell you that you'll still need an extra pair of hands to lift that powerhead off. If it were me, I would swap the entire package. Either way, good luck.

Replacing the whole motor is a lot easier. You will need a hoist but you would need one anyway to swap powerheads. Disconnect the control cables, battery cables and power cables and switch engines. 4 bolts

Boy do I ever agree with Walker. If you change out the lower unit with the motor laying on the ground, Good Luck, as you will need it. After the motor is switched it is much easier to work on the motor on the transom including changing out the Lower unit. A host is mandatory for replacing motors of this size.
