Mecruiser I&O 140 four cylinder

I have to remove this engine to check on the rear main. Does anyone know if the engine can be removed without removing the outdrive. There appears to be enough room to slide the engine foreward to remove the drive shaft from the engine coupler.
Also the engine is 84-86 vintage. Anyone know the difficulty involved in removing the rear seal?
Thanks and hope for some advice.

Even if you can remove the engine with out pulling the drive, the drive will need to be pulled when putting the engine back in, so you can align the engine properly with the gimbel bearing (you will need an alignment tool for this). Pulling the drive will also afford you the opportunity of checking the bellows for water intrusion (bellows should be replaced if they haven't been with in the last 5-6 years), checking the U-joints, and checking the gimbel bearing.

might as well remove the drive too. one of the things ya do after pulling an engine is to realign the gimble brg. with the coupler on the engine after ya put the engine back. you do this with the drive removed and using an alignment bar. it's not real hard to remove the drive. though it's heavy and hard to hold onto. use a drive stand to help ya out with removal and installation of the drive.

Maybe.......but noone is going to recommend it.
It's not difficult to remove the drive and, not worth the chance of damaging something by not removing it...

You will have a much easier time if you remove the outdrive. I believe you can still find the service manual on here for help with the rear seal

Don't do it. You will use every four letter word you ever learned trying to line up the output shaft. You'll have the drive off in minutes, and yet spend hours fiddling at it if you keep the drive attached.

Re: engine removal

OK, I removed the outdrive and the engine. I took off the oil pan and it would appear that is where the leak is coming from vs the rear seal. Just a comment the engine came out easy just four bolts. The real hard part was when I stepped out of the boat and stepped into the oil I drained and observed four quarts spill onto the garage floor. Anyway when I observed the rear seal after removing the cap it is a split seal. Isn't there some kind of plastic removal tool that comes with the seal? The seal actually seems to be intact. My thoughts were that being so far into it to replace it anyway. I have to order parts now and I am sure I need help getting this back together I keep you posted on any progress.
