Looks like I might have to replace my 1984 Mercruiser 228 (305) and looking for opinions. Would buy rebuilt long block and swap everything over.

1) Rapido looks like the cheapest (1,350 w/ no core). Can I trust them? Any experience?

2) Should I go to 350? I already have 1.5 outdrive. Am I saving much gas with the 305? I should only have to change my jets in the carb?

Thanks

Re: engine replacement questions

You could try S&J engines out of Spokane. I just priced a 350 for my 260 Mercruiser and it was 1,313 + 175 ship +250 core with a 125 rebate when you send core back so total of 1,616.00. Look at there videos on the website, looks they do nice work.
YMMV

I used Rapido and was satisfied........just passed 350 hrs.
Definitley go for the 350........might even want to go to a Vortec but you wouldf need a few diffetent parts (intake etc....)

Re: engine replacement questions

I’ve done this swap more than a few times for customers.
Didn’t have to re-jet any of them.
When I asked them what they thought of the performance gains after the job here is what they told me.
1. better hole shot
2. not as much of a gain in top speed as they hoped for --- most got 2-3 mph
3. uses lots more gas now

Re: engine replacement questions

If you go with the 350, why buy rebuilt when you can buy a brand new one for $1,500 and free shipping.
