Engine runs fine, prop will not spin

Hello All,

The guy I bought the boat from stated that the engine needed a "coupler" and that was why the prop would not engage. Engine seems to run pretty well. I plan on heading to the boating store tomorrow and hopefully get a manual for the engine. Is there anything I should be checking for? How hard is it to change this coupler if that is indeed what it is.

1986 Volvo Penta I/O 2.4L

Thanks for any help!

you might just find a link to a manual in the "Adults Only" section of this forum, might save you a trip down to the store.

The drive you have has what's called a flex plate. Later drives had the coupler. Although similar in their function, they are called different names just so you know.

If you need to change the flex plate, the engine needs to be removed. I kinda doubt its the flex plate that is your problem.

You need to first see if your shift cable is operating back at the drive before you do anything.

There is a flex plate attached to the flywheel, but if it's a 270/280/290 outdrive, there is also a coupler on the vertical shaft of the outdrive. It's used to couple the shaft between the upper and intermediate sections and can be seen when you pull the upper gearbox. Should probably check to see if the primary drive shaft from the engine to the outdrive turns to determine which one of these is actually the culprit. You can also turn the prop to see if the driveshaft rotates.

Be aware that to break either one most likely took quite a bit of force. There could easily be other damage so be prepared to inspect carefully.
