The boat was running fine when suddenly it stopped. The engine works fine, the outdrive seems to work fine. There was a smell of rubber and hard rubber chunks were found at back of engine. Does this sound like the coupler gone bad. If this seems to be the problem I need to know the difficulty in changing this out and maybe somewhere I can get a schematic showing the part. This is a 4.3 OMC 1986 model sn/ t0007738 any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds almost like a textbook example of it to me.

dougrussell's website has parts diagrams.
To the best of my knowledge, the motor will have to be removed. At the very least, loosened and moved forward quite a bit. The coupler will be bolted on the flywheel. With the shaft from the drive sticking in it. Of course the drive must be removed as well, but that's obvious.
