I'm at a point where i will need to start thinking about an engine for my restore 1976 16ft. larsone Tri-hull. I have a few marina's around town that have used motor for sale, one being a 1996 115HP Johnson with oil injection trim and tilt. Installed for $3000. Is this a good deal or am i being swindled? What kind of performance would i be looking o get out of this motor with my boat? I dont have lot of experience with purchasing motors so your thoughts are welcome!

The 115 on a 16-footer will flat out fly. I am redoing a 1982 Sea Sprite 16-foot tri-hull open bow, too, and it is getting a 90. Fairly heavy boat, but still ought to move nicely with the 90...
$3000 for a late model 115 with (I'm hoping) some sort of warranty isn't too bad...
- Scott

I have a 73 16 foot larson tri hull with a 85hp 1978 johnson..Havent had it in the water much but the first try with engine I had a gps top speed of 35mph..Now thats with 2 adults and 2 children and a hull full of water I mean full. After that trip I relized I had some hull repair to do..havent had it in the water since got hull fixed.. My sugestion Go to larsonboats.com go to my larson tab then go to achrives put the year of youre boat.. And you will see that years whole prudct line and it has all weighs and recomended engine sizes..Its prety neat to see what youre boat looked like new..

So it sounds like it isnt such a bad deal. i tried the larsons archives and t skips 1976. it goes from 75' to 78'. is it possible i have the wrong year? i was reading 76' off the title soi wouldnt think so.

A price for that engine installed, is pretty fair ... if the dealer would give some kind of warranty & stainless steel prop ... IMHO

By the way, i should mention that the johnson that i am sonsidering has been completly rebuilt (from what the guy told me) he said they went in and replaced pistins and honed etc.. So the engine is in great shape, clean with original controls.

Any particular reason you want to replace the current outboard?

The out board that i picked up with the boat was in all right shape, though i dont know if it runs or not. i was told it did but i dont have the controls to do a compression test and have heard a lot of horror storys about that engine. i would like to have gotten it in tip top shape but frankly i think i want some more power and a little more realiabilty that i would get from a newer engine.

I had a 1976 tri hull, not a Larson though, it was rated for a 90hp and would do about 40mph. A new 90 would have more power than my old boat was rated for, so a new 115 could be over kill.

It would be fun though.

This ones max rating is 140, i am looking to not only do some fishing (with the troler of course) but pull some skiers and tubers (my wifes fav.) so i wanted to make sure there was plenty of power for that and so i can fly across the lake at my own whims notice.

Re: Engine size for 1976 16' tri-hull

I've been looking at decent sized permenant tanks as i really would like to utilize my filler whole and cap already in the boat. The 115 i've been looking at is oil injected so i would have to worry so much about mixing. How would you mix in a large permenant tank? I've always used 6 galloners and just shook it. I'm going to be starting one of those project sites here in a few days with plenty of pics. My first roll is at the wal-mart being put on a disc. I'm anxious to see what you all have to say about my progress.
