I have a 22 foot tri hull deck boat. Iwould like some recommendations for engine horse size on an outboard. The plaque says it can handle 130 ponies but i think a 90 would do just fine.
I have a 15-16 foot tri-hull runabout with an 85hp Johnson V4. It is a good engine for this boat and can run ~34mph. The 90 will be good for cruising, but if you want to ski with a number of people on board, you may want more. <br />--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
crestcraft,<br /><br />I think you will be disappointed. I have NEVER heard anyone complain about too much power. One of the major complaints of new boat buyers is: "underpowered".<br /><br />I always go by the 85% rule (85% or better of rated). You are proposing about 70%. This is especially important because deck boats tend to attract lots of people and gear.<br /><br />You will have to run the 90 a lot harder than you would a 115 or more. Running it hard means, more fuel used and more engine wear.
I know but my problem is that i dont have 2 grand to work with. Althoough i was recently put in touch with a man close to here that has an old junk motor yadr. I also have been offered the ninty horse on a mark twain boat with a bad transom, for 500. i would get the motor throttle and steering with this for 500 and i could sell the junk boat thats sits on a decent trailer for about 300 total cost to me would be like 200. Let me know if you can find a better deal. Sorry i am not try to be an ass, its just that i have put so much making it look nice that it has left me with little for motor. i didnt look that far ahead
