Engine Stalls in rough water???

I have a 1992 65hp evinrude that runs fairly well. I've been having some problems with it staying idling when stopped for a few minutes in rough weather. It will idle all day in the harbour no problem but seems like once the motor starts bouncing around in bigger waves it will occasionally idle low and sometimes stall. As soon as you give it any amount of throttle at all it clears up, its only at idle. Any suggestions?

Give it a good run with Sea Foam/Engine tuner to clear out all deposits.
Then do a complete 'link and sync' according to your manual INCLUDING a re-adjustment of the carburator idle mix.

Rough water will create changes in the exhaust pressure as the motor is being lifted to the surface and then lowered into deeper water. Probably increase the idle speed a bit and that should help you.

Re: Engine Stalls in rough water???

I have already done a link and sync. How many turns should the mixture screws be out? Any other good procedures for setting them?

How high can i set my idle? Im just under 1000 rpm now. Manual says 4 degrees ATDC idle timing and im at around 1 ATDC already. If i advance it any more the spring on the timing advance arm looks like it will be binding up.

Any other advice?

Loose crud laying in the bottom of the float bowl? Gets shook up in rough water and blocks passages. Had one this summer that would run great until it got into real rough water. After checking all wiring for chaffing and loose connections I finally pulled the carbs and found a lot of foreign material. Cleaned and rebuilt carbs and it has ran great ever since.

No guarantee but is a possibility.

Before adjusting the carbs, do a de-carb as mentioned. No idea adjusting a dirty engine.
Remove the throttle cable, start the engine and let it warm up properly, keep it in neutral.
Adjust the rpm (lower ignition) as far as possible, engine still running. Carb roller must be free of cam.
Start with middle cylinder.
Adjust the mix screw IN by 1/16 turn at the time. When the cylinder 'sneeze' due to lean condition, back off 1/2 turn.
Continue with the other cylinders.
The lower you rpm you can get the engine running at, the easier and more precise will the adjustment be. Try however to keep the rpm the same when adjusting all cylinders.
When finished, adjust the roller so it hits the mark at indicated value for 'pick-up' timing.
Put the engine in gear, boat moving freely.
Adjust the idle rpm to about 750-800.
In neutral the rpm might be 900-1000, the idle timing might be 1ATD, DOES NOT MATTER!
