Could need a tuneup, maybe a carb rebuild, could have water in the fuel (Check Filters). Who knows. We don't even know what engine and drive you have, or what year.

I had the exact same problem with my '98 Alpha I Gen II (4.3 EFI).
I know your combination is much older. So, I'll have to agree with the post suggesting the shift cable.
Mine was practically new at the time and I was able to correct it with a minor adjustment to the shift linkage. If I recall correctly, the brass barrel was out by just a couple of turns. Been working fine since then (going on four years now).

There is no limit switch on the gimbal ring that has anything to do with shifting controls. All that limit switch does is keeps the drive from being TRIMMED up, without using the trailer button.
Has absolutly nothing to do with the ignition or shifting, unless someone has the wiriing all screwed up.

Ayuh,..........

And,.....
If by Chance you're talking about the Interupter Switch on the Shift Bracket, that's Sticking,+ Shutting Down the Motor,............

Replace the Lower Shift Cable,........ Like Don said in his 1st reply to Fix It......
It's NOT the Switch,... Or the Bracket,... Or the Adjustments.......
It's the Lower Shift Cable..........

I have a 1985 Mercruiser 260HP, Alpha1, Thunderbolt Ignition - Engine frequently stalls when shifting into fwd or reverse. Shift lever is stiff. Could this be lower shift cable? Is this tough to replace?
