1978L6 165hp 165merc outdrive, runs great for a few minutes with the exception of max rpms ,at wot i use to get about 4300 to 4500 , now i only getting 4000 at wot. it will stall out and i throttle back to idle and start over and the samething happens , so i have read some of the other similar post so im thinking a tuneup is in order, any suggestions or comments are welcome and appreciated. thanks, p.s. i have owened the boat for 2yrs and have not did a tune up yet because it has ran great up to this point.

Re: engine stalls

sounds like carb issues, i have had some of the same going on, start with the less expensive tune up, plugs (Make sure you properly gap new plugs) wires, rotorcap & button, then move to the carb, rebuild or replace. the ethanol is an engines worst enemy now days. make sure you use Sta Bill in the fuel if it sits for a month or so without use, also install a fuel shutoff valve in the fuel line and run the carb completely out of gas.
