I originally took this video to come on here and ask about the exhaust gases coming up through the hole, but I found another post where a guy said to just inject silicone sealer to encase the wires and let it cure to seal off this hole. I didn't have a rubber grommet and didn't know to do this.

Anyway, even with the cowl off, this runs rough. It won't idle at the right point, but it will idle. I recently rebuilt the carbs and cleaned under all the welch plugs. Set the screws to 5/8 turn out as said, but have turned them up to 1/4 turn each way with no effect. I have spark on both cylinders as well. Compression is good. What am I missing? The engine doesn't get hot and the gas is fresh running 50:1

Just a couple of guesses for ya, slag. It sounds, IMHO, like it's runnin a 'lil rich at idle, or maybe the timing ain't quite right. Have ya looked up the "link & sync" procedures on here? Hope this helps.

Have you used an inductive timing light to check for strong steady spark on both cylinders?
You should do a link & sync as suggested.
How low are you trying to make it idle?

I'm at 15.5 degrees while cranking it. WOT should be 19 so Im almost spot on. I agree, it sounds a little rich and slightly advanced. How else do I adjust the idle aside from the screw? I could bottom out the idle adjustment screw and it wouldn't be enough. I've done the link and sync/linkage adjustment from the evinrude manual and it appears spot on.

Daviet. Not used a light, but I did use a spark plug tester. Will try the light and new plugs as well.

Thanks all for the advice.

If you cannot change the engine operation by turning the low speed needle valves, you still have carb problems.

They are spotless. Weird.

When you cleaned the carbs, did you blow it out with compressed air? You didn't loose the little plastic needle valve seat for the low speed needle did you?

Nope, I put two new ones in. pulled the old ones out without damaging the orifice and put in two new ones that came in my kit.

Slag, I'm leanin toward the timing, 'cause it sounds like ya got the carbs right. If the light shows it to be off, use the link I sent to set the points with an ohmmeter. It's the most accurate way I've found to get 'em right. It really helped a LOT on my '75 9.9 with points.

No points here, I have a CDI. I will readjust the timing to be spot on though. Its possible being off almost a degree is the cause of my issues.
