Engine stops at full throttle under load at 2100rpm... except when you first launch.

Hi guys, quick question. I have a 1994 Bayliner 2452 Hardtop, with a repowered 5.7L Merc MCM 260 in it, and a thunderbolt 5 ignition., alpha one outdrive. The strangest thing happened this season.

Took the boat out a few days ago, with 7 people on it, full fuel. It wouldnt get on plane, maxed out at 15 MPH and 2100 RPMs. I assumed it was because we had 7 people and a full tank of gas on it.

Decided to take it home, drain the gas, replace the air filter, and take it back out with just 2 of us. As soon as we launched, it jumped on plane immediately and went 32 MPH @ 3000 RPMs full throttle. Stayed on plane for 10-15 minutes, then I idled it down to grab a drink.

Went back under throttle, and the same. Exact. Thing. Won't top 2100 RPM, or 10-13 MPH, even with only 2 of us it on it. I never got it to get past 2100rpm or back to 32MPH again once it was fully warmed up for the rest of the day. I let it sit and turned it off for 5-10 minutes a few times, same thing. We are at a loss for ideas. My next step is to check plugs / wires / cap but they are less than a year or two old, and 10 hours on the boat. Anyone have any suggestions before I lose my mind?

I'd start by checking compression and spark to each cylinder individually. Sounds like you're not running on all 8. Also you didn't mention checking your fuel/ and water separator filters.

See if you have a knock sensor on the starboard side of the block above the starter. If you do, make sure its doing it then stop, pull the plug off the sensor and try again

Pulling knock sensor and replacing. Will try fuel/water separator as soon as we can find it.

The fuel water separator most often is down low on the starboard side (looks like an oil filter). Pulling the wire off it will tell you if that's what's doing it, no need to replace if its not the problem
