Engine stops when hitting wave hard.

Hi

I have a Mercruiser 5.7L -91 AlphaOne I, in a boat from the same year, that of and on behaves strangely.

Every time the boat hits a wave hard, I mean real hard, the engine stops. I then have to crank it several times before it starts again. If I pump the shift remote a few times prior to cranking it starts easier.
The fuel line seems ok, the corrosion free 150 L fuel tank is as new and sits firmly.

Over all, except from this, it starts and runs perfectly.

Any ideas on what this is al about?
Sugestions?

Thanks

Don't hit the waves so hard.

Sorry - I couldn't resist. ;)

Are you low on fuel? Perhaps the extreme angle causes a temporary fuel starvation?

Otherwise, I would suggest double checking all of the electrical connections for looseness or corrosion.

You got a bad connection somewhere. To cut out right after a hard hit, has to be electrical. On a 5.7 carbed motor, pumping the gas to start is normal.

did this problem exist prior to the fuel tank replacement? if not. my first assumption would be something that got touched during the fuel tank replacement. electric connections for sure. take them apart and clean them. looking at them isn't good enough. if that don't cure it then i'd think i would be looking at item #3 from the adult's only sticky.. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288430

when the engine is cold i agree. when it's warm i disagree. since the op says pumping it helps to restart after it fails from hitting these big waves, this makes me think lacking of fuel is the issue...

ya did replace the fuel filters didn't ya? filter in the fuel/water separator if ya got one too.

imho..

Agree that electrical is strong probability. but also...
Check your carb for water/debris/corrosion in the float bowl.

Re: Engine stops when hitting wave hard.

Thank you all for your replays.

@Fishermark: Well, my wife agrees with you on slowing down so you got yourself one new fan :).
Last time it stopped the tank was almost full.
The fuel filter is new and the water filter/separator was inspected and emptied recently. However i believe that the water separator is the original and maybe it should be replaced. How age dependent is this item?

Electrical? Well, it cannot be excluded but the pumping -need suggests that something happens with the fuel access.

I have only had the boat for two short (Swedish) seasons and I haven?t had the tank replaced. It?s the original one.
About the carburetor, can you elaborate this?

Regards

You can empty them out to get a good idea of what's going on in your tank... but they should also simply be replaced.

Your boat is a 1991? And the fuel separator is, you think, original?

"Maybe it should be replaced." You think? Yeah - time to throw out the old one and install a new one. I don't know if it will solve your problem or not... but it is something that certainly needs to be done.

By the way - what did you find when it was recently emptied out?

Hi

When I took apart the water filter I found water, some small black particles but no rust or any other debris. I let I soak in petrol / gasoline, rinsed it and put it together again.

I cannot know for sure that it's the original but as the boat is from France and the text on the filter is in French ....... well.

By the way, the boat is a:

Are the canister's difficult to find there in Sweden?

We can pick them up at pretty much any place that sells boat parts here in the states for little little. $5 or so.

Even here on Iboats you can order one for $6.60.

are we talking a 1 meter high wave or every wave whilst on the plane.may be down to a bad connection but you may be able to wire a light into the circuit and run it upto the dash via a small switch so it stays on when running in certain conditions and if ignitions lost when hitting the said waves at least u should be able to isolate problem.could turn lamp off up at dash under normal operating conditions too!

Re: Engine stops when hitting wave hard.

My boat was doing this same thing. It was a loose connection on the oil sender right above the oil filter (5.7).

While trouble shooting I saw there was no fuel. I checked and the fuel pump wasnt working.

The sender shuts the fuel off if it's not wired.

Son heck those connections are tight on the sender above the oil filter.

Pretty good ideas fellas but I would also get the Carb rebuilt, the hit of a large wave can cause old gaskets in the carb to seep air and loose pressure also the floats could need adjustment as well. I would definately check the electrical side of this since thats the most likely area in question but I would not overlook the carb either, with the age of the boat and not knowing the last time the carb was rebuilt it would simply be a good idea.

I would likely check the float height in the carb.
