I have a 21 ft. cuddy with a Mercruiser 188 hp 888 model. Just got the boat, cheap. Just was told it was under fresh water. What do I drain...check...or do? Thanks Seibel

Re: Engine submerged...What should I Do ?

how long ago was it submerged? Was anything done to it after it was brought up? First thing I would do is load up on marvel mystery oil, ATF fluid, and Seafoam. Marvel Mystery oil will free up any stuck parts and clean them, ATF will remove rust, and Seafoam will allow water to be absorbed into the gas or engine oil so it will be thinned out as gas and oil is changed. If it was dunked awhile ago and nothing had been done to it, pull the heads, if its rusted in there, you need to get it honed or scrap the block completely. I would start changing the engine oil immediately. Also, put some seafoam in the engine oil after you change it. Then start pulling the spark plugs, adding a slurry of the atf and marvel mystery oil and turning the engine over by hand a few times. then I'd check the starter, see if it will turn the engine over. make sure your fuel system and ignition system is disconnected in the meantime. Thats what i'd do and tell us what you find.

Just occured to me, since water is probably in the cylinders, pull the spark plugs and turn it over to get rid of the water if any. then goto the marvel and atf.

Would ATF remove rust on most anything? Without damaging surrounding materials?

ATF works well with removing rust, a batch of ATF, Marvel Mystery, 30 weight, and a scotch-brite pad does quite well. It wont hurt the surrounding surface as long as rust hasnt loosened it.
