engine swap

looking at possibly swapping a 2000 75HP 2 stroke mercury outboard for a 1999 40HP 4 stroke Mercury outboard. Can anyone tell me if the controls are interchangeable or will they need to be swapped as well?

the 75hp is on a 20ft pontoon. dont need that much motor. any help on the control compatability would be awesome!
