Engine swap

I am looking at purchasing a Regal 27 foot cruiser. I think it is a 1982 or there abouts (the HIN) is missing.) Anyway the present owner pulled the original engine, a 289 CI and replaced it with a 454 CI. My question(s) are the present engine (454) has about 25 hours on it, Are there any places around that swap engines (one for one?) Also, would the current transmission work with a 5.0 or 5.7L. I am not looking for a speed boat, I just want a comfortable boat to take trips and such with my family.

Run away.
Plenty of other boats out there w/o dubious legalities.
As for the swap idea......since you should be running away from it, no need to address that can of wworms.

Re: Engine swap

Understood, but if I should by it ( the price is right and the owner is known) what are the odds of getting and even swap for the engine. That would be the determining factor.

Re: Engine swap

I think the odds of some prior owner showing up some day to claim his stolen property, or the local water cops impounding it for a not having a valid HIN are pretty good...

I Question it's lineage of Engines,......

289cid. is a Ford Small Block motor......
454cid is a Chevy Big Block.......

There Had to be some Gearing or Prop changes when That happened,......

And, Now you want to Swap, the Big Block for a SBC,.... Possibly even the Anemic 305cid,....????

You're going to Need All the Old Gearing,+ Prop..............

I Think Babying a Big Block would be a Better Bet,.........

The Only Way somebody is going to Swap you Even for those motors is,.... On a Pallet,...... No Labor...........

(edit),........
I just found This,.... Maybe This Guy is willing to Trade,.. He Needs the HorsePower,.....Might be to Heavy though......

I am still baffled why anyone would even consider a boat missing a HIN????
Who would buy a car without a VIN plate???
No one in their right mind.....
Same situation.

I have a Regal... the HIN was stamped into the gelcoat at the stern. Someome would have to intentionally removed it. I believe it's also on the metal ID plate that's riveted near the throttle.

Re: Engine swap

Maybe he got the year wrong. 289s were gone in 82, so if it was originaly a 289 it would have to be older, possibly before they started using HIN numbers.
When did they start HINs? 74?

1975 started HIN's in Canada.
Didn't Ford make the last 289 in about 1968?????

A 27 foot cruiser with a 289???? A displacement hull? it ain't gonna get on plane with a 289...

nothing makes sense there ....
