Got a '02 90 Merc. Had a stuck thermostat when I bought it....found out the first time I went to the lake and the overheat horn went off. But It has a pressure relief valve also so if you hook her up and get some water pressure into the lower unit she opened the press relief valve, which bypassed the thermostat and it cooled ok....got me back to the dock.

Pulled it out but might want to put it back in. But that is another topic.

Teleflex Morse makes a dash mounted engine temp kit for OB's. I noticed about an 1/8" pipe, maybe 1/4" tapped hole (plugged) on the engine's water jacket at the top which I presume is where the temp gauge sending unit goes.

Has anyone added an after market gauge like this and if so do you just route the tube along with your electrical wires from the engine to the dash?

Any thing one should know as far as gotcha's are concerned?

Thanks,

Mark

Re: Engine temp gauge questions

For temp gauge...

Either you have to run the temp sender wire down the rigging tube from your dash to your engine. Or most engine harnesses have a wire for sending the temp..

If you look on the engine side of the external engine harness, besides the 8 pins, there should be bullet connectors for tilt/trim (green and blue), trim sender (brown/wht), and tempeature (tan). You can run your new temp sender from the cylinder head to that bullet connector. Then the should be a tan wire coming out the dash side of the external engine harness and that goes to the gauge.

There is no "tube" with a temperature gauge. Its an electrical gauge. Water pressure gauges use a tube. The gauges have two very different purposes.

Ok Andy, you're the man. I know the tan wire of which you speak.

Say Up: Guess I been working on too many old tractors. They're all self contained and use fluid espansion to control the needle. I like the idea of electrical; don't have to worry about kinking the tube.

Thanks guys.

Mark
