1986 Force Outboard, 85 hp

I am thinking of buying a 16' bayliner. There is one thing about the engine that bothers me though which may be a problem.

The engine starts and runs great in every gear. However, when I shift from idle to a gear and back, the lower unit makes a "ching, ching, ching" sound for a few seconds and then the noise stops when it is in gear or back to idle. Someone said that this noise is ok, and not to worry. Should I?

Re: Engine that makes noise when shifting.

depends on severity of clunk you are describing .Generaly you should shift briskly into forward or reverse positions without punching through too much as to throttle up.all will clunk some as per design of shift mechanism.
