Shes fresh water- I guess I will have to read the manual on how to check flows- i know nothing about flows but i am assuming that -this part of the engine may not be getting cooled by the flowing water- sound correct?

I don't know the sixs very well, but that looks like the number 3 exhaust area, tick could be a lifter collapse, or bleed down restriction and over extending the lifter, and resultant valving problems allowing the isolated overheat?

I don't know the sixs very well,

Ayuh,... The 120 is an I-4,...
But I believe that is the neighborhood of the 2-3 exhaust port...

The Tick could also be Detonation, melting the motor away....

I guess lookin' at the sparkplugs might be a Story Teller,.... Or not...
A Compression Test at the same time wouldn't hurt either...
And,...
We still don't know if the Impeller has been changed during this century,.....

I would think a compression test is the first step, it would show valving problems, when pulling the plug it may show something straight away.

sorry, I just assumed a six.

Re: engine tick turning black

- From bow to stern my compression test reads

100 - 100 - 90 - 80 - PSI

All of the plugs looked about the same - fairly black

What should my next step be?

Re: engine tick turning black

could you have an exhaust leak or the valves need a set up?

Well that's not very positive

- I already replaced everything but the engine and drive-

I am looking to buy a different boat- I just want to get this one in good enough shape to sell without feeling guilty

Re: engine tick turning black

What kind of compression should I have? The Manual says if the compression varies over 20- 30 psi then there is a problem- I'm not that far off-

that is true.but when a cylinder gets that low its laboring.so u give more throttle to maintain speed.if its that hot it could be a exhaust leak at high revs.do a tempurature reading, maybe with a infrared thermometer.be sure u got plenty of water flow.hth

Ayuh,... You're the 1 who put the Cart, ahead of the Horse....

The motor needs to be Rebuilt or Replaced....
The compression should be about 125psi or Higher on all 4 cylinders....
That motor is a rebuildable Core at Best,... An Anchor at worst....
