My ongoing saga with my Johnson 130 continues. When I last reported in, it would go WOT
fine, on and off, for about an hour to 90 mins. Then it would bog down and never again reach
planing speed. I've been using an external 6.5 gallon tank to help me troubleshoot this problem.
After a long break of not using it I've started taking her out again the past few weeks.
Without changing anything, except new non-ethanol fuel, I was able to get her to cruise over planing speed,
but not WOT, for the entire trip without fail. We were able to cruise for about 2 hours on the original
6.5 gallons plus some extra I put in on our return home. That's something I could live with. We came home
with a bit less than 1/2 a tank (2-3gals).
Today I took her out with the same 6.5 gallon load and a 5gal can that was about 1/4 full, just in case.
We extended the range today by about 3 miles figuring the fuel use last weekend was promising and we
should have no problem with this extension. The first hour of the ride (about 3 miles) was both fast cruising
and minimum wake cruising. I had it in WOT position but it wasn't producing the same power it did last weekend.
With fast cruising I could sense the power was diminishing the longer I was in that throttle position.
I'd say it was about 2/3 of the power from last week. In addition, it used WAY more fuel! So much so that I
stopped and put in the gas from can and turned right around to head home.
That still wasn't enough gas to get us home!! By my on-water calculations we woulnd't make it and had to stop to refuel.
I used minimal throttle to limp us 2 miles to a marina. I filled the 6.5 gal tank and we headed home.
During that last leg I noted the engine kept losing power. I'd decrease throttle and a minute later I could
increase and get her to stay above planing speed. That only happened twice but it tells me something
is seriously amiss with the engine. I checked spark plug wire connections and made sure no fuel was leaking
anywhere. I am at my wits end with this engine!
I could use some troubleshooting tips and any other tips on figuring out the root cause of this power problem,
plus the new excessive fuel usage.
