I finally got my spark problem fixed after converting to 12v coils. My '74 Chrysler 35hp outboard. I got it started today after the conversion and it ran rough at first, then smoothed out after 2 minutes, I let it run another 5 minutes after it smoothed out. I just rebuilt the carb so I don't think this is the problem. I turned it off and now it just backfires and will not start. I have tried priming the cylinders. It sounds like it is turning over easier also(lost compression maybe). I do not have a compression guage but it does have what feels like a lot of compression if I put my finger over the spark plug hole and turn it over.

I'd take a look at the flywheel and see if the flywheel key isn't broken.
