I have a 1999 5.7 L engine and Bravo 3 drive with 215 hours. We were out the other day and had been running for a good hour when I started to hear a loud clicking noise. After a short period of time, the serpentine belt broke and the temperature quickly rose to slightly higher than 220 degrees before I shut it down and paddled to shore?

To make a long story short, when I took the engine?s circulating pump out the bearing was totally shot.

The only thing I can think that I did that could have any effect was when I replaced the seawater pump impeller last year and adjusted the belt. I adjust the belt tension to allow for about 1/4 inch of deflection of the belt as measured halfway between the belt tension adjuster and the power steering pump (longest unsupported distance), per the manual. I?ve run it for about 15 hours since and this was the first sign of a problem.

I've never heard of the bearing going out like that on the engine?s water pump. Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem? Should I be adjusting the belt differently? What other things should I check before trying to run the engine again?

Re: Engine Water Circulating Pump

The pump on my 98 5.0 merc failed like that. Sounded like a broken rod when it went. $100 or so for a new Sierra and it was good as new.
