Engine water temp

Hey guys,

Just a quick question about water temp. 95 VP 5.0FI 302 sx cobra. There are two temp sensors, one in the water pump, one in the intake manifold. The intake manifold is for the ecu/fuel, the water pump for the temp gauge. What kind of temp should this be running at normally? I put a thermostat in it last season, and according to my manual it is something like 158deg thermostat. I've never seen my temp get that high, or even about 120. Is this normal? Friends have boat with merc 305 gm engines, and they are always running about mid gauge on their temp. It seems a little weird that the temp gauge is right in the water pump, because I think you would basically be reading the lake water coming in, but not sure exactly how it flows. Anyway, I was going to purchase a electronic temp gauge and trying to to install it just to compare its reading. My temp gauge is part of a cluster (similar to an automotive dash) instead of separate 2" gauges like some boats have. No where in my owners manuals, or clymer tells me what normal operating temperature is supposed to be.

Thanks in advance.

John
