I have a 1989 85hp Force Outboard with a type 3 ignition system After taking my boat out of winter storage I started the engine to run it awhile. Went to turn off engine and when I switched the key to the off position it just keeps running. I have to pull the lanyard emergency kill switch to stop engine.I can restart it with the key. I recently installed a temp guage by taking the 2 wires off the warning alarm and tranfering them over as per the instructions. Could this have caused my problem. Replaced the ignition switch as suggested by a boat repair facility, but did not solve the problem.

Try disconnecting the temp guage and see if problem still exists. What color wires do you have going to both M positions on the switch?

Hi!

Thanks for the info!.

I will give it a try. The wires I have going to both m's are white and orange. In fact the orange wire is the one that goes to the Temp guage. I have also discovered I have bought the wrong guage, the one I bought monitors water temp, not cyl head temp OOP'S. why does it not work and do you think I will have the same problem with new guage.

I am not sure on the ignition system you are using but I am pretty sure an orange wire should not be going to one of the M positions. Typically when the switch is turned off the two M positions short out which I believe shorts out both coils together which kills the motor. Something about the temp guage is your problem. I am mainly chrysler so hopefully someone with a service manual for a force can help you out.

Hello,
I read up in my Force Manual and It sais that there is a fuse block with blue, red, orange, green, white, and yellow wires. Now in some way the orange I think is connected to the temp gauge and the ignition! Do you know what the problem is yet?
