Check your cooling system. NOW! Start at the lower end intake screens impeller, cooling tube, Flush block, check tell tale. Yer gonna seize er!

Definetely sounds like its overheating. Don't run it without confirming the cooling circuit is functional.

1987 45hp Mercury

Mercury Service Manual p/n 90-86135--5
This is available a variety of places online, through your local marine service department, by contacting Mercury directly, or can be found used on eBay quite often. Might even get lucky and find a copy at your local library.

I strongly recommend the factory manual, but you could also consider using an aftermarket version such as Seloc. iboats sells that one:

Mercury/Mariner Outboard Tune-Up & Repair Manual - Mercury Outboards, 40-115hp, 3-4 Cylinder , 2 Stroke Models, 1965-1989 Part # 1406
