Engine Wont start

I've been working on a 78 Mercury 80hp 4 cylinder. It has sat for a long time and I would like to get it running reliably. I checked spark to all 4 cylinders with timing light and they all have spark. I sprayed ether in cyclinder just to make it pop over and I can't seem to get the engine to even show signs of wanting to start. I would assume with a bit of ether it should fire. I want to have it turn over before I rebuild carbs. Could this be the timing and how do I correct the timing? I know how on a car but is the procedure the same? What are the proper plugs also so I can confirm the right ones are installed. They are odd looking with no arm on the end in the cylinder to arc across. I have never seen plugs like this. I checked one by placing close to block and there was a strong spark. Any info would be appreciated.

Search on :"timing and synch" in the serch engine here. I did a real long post on the subject.

Check the compression too, ether does not oil the cylinders.

-W

Frist, don't use either to try to start it it will dry the cyls. at least and could ruin the engine, us a gas oil mix and a squirt can. the engine uses L78V plugs

I knew you guys would say that about ether. I will try out the timing and synch this evening, but knowing this engine has sat for 10 years or so what would you suggest replacing. I planned on a rebuild for carbs, but what else for the fuel system. Thanks for previous info as well hopefully it gets me started.

If it won't pop over and run with fresh fuel spritzed in the jugs, but you have spark, you probably have a timing prob. Time to invest in a model-specific manual. Do check compression, should be over 100 in each jug, with no more than 10-15% difference between all four cylinders. Timing ain't hard to do, but you need a manual to do it right.

THanks I'm heading to the library, are the Manuals that encompass several years any good?
