I have a 1998 Mercury 115hp that won't turn over. Check all 3 batteries and I've got a full charge. Engine tilts up and down, but I don't hear the starter motor engage or wind up.

Any clues?

1998 Proline Sport 19'
1998 Mercury 115hp 2-stroke

No clicking or noises of any sort? Make sure it's in neutral, since there's a switch that only allows it to start in neutral. If that's not the problem I would suspect there's something wrong with that neutral start switch, or the starter solenoid.

Ran an ohms check on the neutral safety switch; tested ok. jumped the starter solenoid on the engine; engine cranks over. Tested the lanyard kill switch; tested okay. Took a test light and have power to the Red wire leading into the ignition switch. But no power on the Yellow/red strip or Purple when key is turned.

So I guess I'm gonna change the igntion switch next.

If that don't work, any other advice?

Whiz, do you have a 20amp fuse between the hot wire on the solenoid and the ignition switch?. Might be blown or defective. Put a voltmeter at the solenoid hot wire(red) and the ignition switch. Should read voltage. Also, did you remove the battery cables and clean good? especialy the ground cable?

Jerry

Laotzu:
Thanks for the reply; turned out to be the ignition switch. However, now that the motor turns over, I got to figure out why it won't idle. Guess the first thing will be to hook up a spare tank with fresh gas, if not that, then I'll try replacing the fuel pump diaphram and test the plugs... Did I miss anything?

Whiz
