We have lost cats and we have lost chickens over the years, but today those FRIGGEN coyotes got into the hen run for the last time!!!!
GUNS, POISON. TRAPS, I do not care, they are going "down"
Brazen little @$%^%, how dare they do a day time hit, then come back a 7.00 PM PST, stand in the middle of the field looking for some more.

OK guy's what can I do, no holds barred on this one!

I have found that a .22/250 head shot works well.

Know your background, set up free fire zones, discharge as needed.

Itsaboatime had a real good point.

If you happen to prefer a shotgun, I have never used it so I cannot vouch for it, but HEVI-Shot? Dead Coyote! Shotshells are supposed to, according to reviews in BPS, do a real good job. One reviewer claims geese kills at 90 yards. They are a bit pricey at $4.00 per round. If I chose the shotgun route, I would start with #4 buckshot - 3". Gives you 41 pellets headin' after the bad guy. If that did not do the trick, I'd use #00.

Just my two cents

rbh,

Concider Snare sets?

From your post you seem to be a little inexperianced in dealing with this type of situation. And sitting on a stump hours on end may not be your cup of tea.

With a little research and a few bucks you could set up snare sets and sit back and wait.

If you have any questions shoot me a PM.

.223 Nosler Ballistic Tips fly pretty good and really do some damage to the coyotes. Well, most calibers with those tips do ....;) Even the 22 mags.:D

Those coyotes can get pretty cagey once you start taking shots at them.

My friend has a problem with them them, and they have come to know every time he pulls out a rifle . Once we tied two live chickens to a couple trees as bait one night and waited in his barn windows, rifles ready.... Nothing all evening or night! We think they knew we were there, even though we were about 200 yards out, and they sometimes come right up to his house and barn in broad daylight.

Go get em any way you can!

Re: Enough of this crud

Folks around here often keep a large dog trained to guard sheep, chickens or whatever. Many goat ranchers keep a burro or llama with their herds. Daughter #3 kept a llama with her goats. He did a good job. She quit goats and now raises llamas. :)

Second choice is professional predator hunters who use poison, traps, bait and occasionally guns and predator calls. This is dangerous and only partly successful.

Coyotes are survivors; about as smart as your average wild turkey when it comes to avoiding getting shot. They learn pretty quickly to avoid places where there are big dogs who hate them or hooved critters who live to stomp them.

On The Hideout lives a three legged coyote matriarch known as Tripod whom I see every now and then. She does no harm unless you consider eating the occasional stray feral cat harmful. I don't. I consider her usual diet of rats, mice, snakes, persimmons and other vegetable matter beneficial.

Put the word out that you have a problem and invite sportsmen to do some coyote hunting. You set the ground rules and let them have at it.

Here in VT they have Coyote contests every year to "remove" them.

I personally have a number of sweet rifles that will dispatch them out to 600 yards. Setting a bunch of traps will also help........ have any local trapping enthusiasts ....... coyotes make for good practice

A couple of years ago, I took 2 by way of .22

Their hearing/smelling capacity is very keen. For protecting livestock, a big outside dog will be on guard 24/7. Good Luck

On my Uncles farm.. He shoots them when they come around.

He's also a hunter so he doesn't mind sitting and waiting for the kill shot. If they are getting into the animals. Go to a sporting good store and buy some female fox urine. a few sprays around the areas you have seen them. Sit and wait. BANG!

Fox's aren't dumb animals. My uncle has seen them distract the dogs, one fox will slowly wander into the fields keeping the dogs attention. While the other one(s) come in for a feeding.

Re: Enough of this crud

20 yrs ago I used to hunt a NY county that had a terrible coyote explosion. Domestic pets and farm animals disappearing regularly. County voted to offer $50 per kill for a two week period. Hundreds (maybe up to 1000) were dropped off. Local High School whose teams were "Coyotes" used the pelts to decorate their school. They never repeated the event after much protest from the local critter huggers.

Hmm. I kinda figured Bob would come up with something that involved an adequate amount of C4, a remote detonator and a spare chicken.:D

I'd buy a ticket to that.

Here is what my wife would recommend to me. Go rent a chicken costume, put it on, go out in the chicken coop, and carry a big hammer. Then wait for the varmit to come and get you and then wack him over the head :D

I have a new .204 ruger that I'd love to try out on some coyotes.

might try an electronic call.

Did you ever think about raising lions?

Not knowing who you are, the thought of someone dressed in camo with black ashes under their eyes, stalking the coyote rambo-style... brought a smile to my face.

I feel like doing that sometimes when I hunt moles.:D

Re: Enough of this crud

Well thank's for all the replies guy's-
We are on 5.5 acreas and are nearest neighbours are 600 yards in one direction, 400 yards in another plus 2 more alittle farther out so we are sorrounded on all sides basically.
So if I was smart, no guns. (up for interpitation)
So it looks as if it is bait and trap somehow (then wack em). :)
So whats it going to be, wire snare or leghold????

(22 longs only, won't pull out the big bore, it's really loud)

If you're going to trap, I'd use the leghold. Be sure to check the regs in your area for the rules and also don't forget to check them twice daily. You don't want to snare your neighbors dog...

Another alternative to a gun could be a bow if you have one. If your good enough you could get one 75+ yards away. A .22 LR would do the trick too, but those bullets can also travel up to 2 miles. Another thing to look into would be one of those high powered pellet guns. From my understanding there has been huge advances from the pump 20 time BB guns I had as a kid.

/Used to have BB wars with friends on 2 pumps as a kid;)

Go through a hunter safety course if you don't hunt. In many states yote season is year round and they are part of your small game permit but check as I haven't hunted them in some time .22/250 or .223 is a good choice but I used a 12 guage w/No.2 or 4 shot and a predator call like wounded rabit and a blind or tree stand. we could even do night hunts and use a red light hung from a tree near the call back then.

Good luck, and you might want to check around and see if anyone around you buys pelts, would hate to see your efforts go to waste. We used to sell all our pelts, muskrat, opossum, wood chuck, yotes, occasionaly a mink to the man who owned a local bait and tackle shop (Andy's bait and tackle) but he's been dead since the late eighties.

I still vote snare.
You can set them close to the house or on paths on your property.

Re: Enough of this crud

You can also get the bigger live traps. Bait em up with raw chicken. Make sure you hit it with "scent away" so it doesn't smell like you. I have heard thay are more humane than the other traps. Personally if I cought one,the trap would just hold the critter till I could shoot it.

I'm no hunter. I fish.

But when a Coyote comes on the property and starts helping himself, he has be be taken care of.
