Just bought an evinrude 140 (1984) rebuilt. On the way transferring it it was on its side in box of truck(no leaks) I put in my shop overnight. When I came out in morning there was a black oil leaking out from the prop area!?! What does this mean?? Is that from being on side or is that bad seals...and its blackish?? thx:(

If you can trace the source of the oil back up to the exhaust area, then you can be pretty sure it's just unburned 2-stoke oil residue.

To be 100% sure ... and because you just bought the used motor ... I'd recommend changing the gear case lube. Be sure to use new nylon washers with the drain and fill plugs.

Those that would work will require re-hub, generally not worth the change.

Count the splines on your prop shaft (13 or 15) so that you get the correct propeller size and work from there. The "boat propellers" tab at the top of the page should help.

The 84 140 E/J has a 13 spline propshaft and a 4 1/4" gearcase. Merc props for both the 4 1/4" and 4 3/4" gearcase are 15 spline. If you find a Merc prop for the 4 1/4" gearcase (generaly around 13 1/4" diameter) you'd have to change the hub for it to work on an OMC case.

A 19 pitch prop is probably a good place to start-then check your top rpm's. You want to hit 5500-5800 rpm at rull throttle with that engine. If that prop is not right on, get the correct one and keep that as a spare.
