envinrude motor with an issue .

I have looked at the last post regarding the motor still running after shutting off. I have that same problem with mine this weekend and do not understand why it will start everytime but when key is turned back it just keeps running sound like it wants to stop but wont until I manualy choke it. Have ckecked wiring but cannot diagnose thisany help would be great.motor is 78 evinrude 40 hp model 40655 a.

Black/yellow wire from powerpack may have a break or poor connection or ignition sw is NG.

Your motor is a 1976, not a '78. Makes a BIG difference in this case. You have two wires going to the "M" terminals on the key switch. The switch electrically connects those wires together to stop the motor.

Try using a jumper wire to connect them together. If it stops, you have a bad switch. If it doesn't stop, you have a wires problem between there and the motor's magneto.

Sorry actually realized that after. How do i determine were the m switch is and if it does work when i connect them like u said can I leave them like that or will I have to get a New switch. Really appreciate the help. Thanks.

It's just part of the ignition switch. The picture I posted is the backside of an ignition sw sowing all it's terminals.

Do this first as suggested by F_R:
"Try using a jumper wire to connect them together. If it stops, you have a bad switch. If it doesn't stop, you have a wires problem between there and the motor's magneto."
