Is anyone else worried about the changes to the EPA's Clean Water Act of 2008, which going into effect on Sept 30, 2008?

From my understanding the rules and fines are the same for us as they are for supertankers and freighters. The bad part is that the EPA is allowing individual states to seperately issure permits and impose fines. The really bad part is that to travel between states we will need permits for each.

What this means if I travel from DE to FL, I have to have permits for DE, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA and FL This is I use the ICW, If I go outside I will need permits for DE, MD, VA and FL, if I have the legs.

I know, congress has a bill in both houses to make exceptions for boats under 79 feet (LOA) but the likelyhood of it being brought to the floor and voted on are somewhere around Save the Spotted Owl fund. It does not matter that 18.5 million boats need to be permitted (EPA figures) congress is entering and election year, and summer recess.

With the fine; as stated by the EPA of $32,500.00 PER DAY, I love boating, but I refuse to loss everything I have worked my entire life for because of a dumb law that should not have happened in the first place. For those that think there boating insurance will cover the cost, think again. It won't, I checked. Accoring to the new rules, If I go fishing and clean my catch within the 3 mile limit, I can be fined. and lord help me if I catch and clean my fish in a bay or river.

Has anyone else done any reseach and what are out options? Please don't tell me to write to my congressman or senator.

Re: EPA permit system

There's a thread on here with people discussing it.

You'll probably get a lot of info of it.

Personally my opinion is don't sweat it. It's not going to affect us a bit.

It's just working it's way through the machine and will take some time.

Your not gonna get fined for riding around in your boat or for fishing.

Don't get caught up worrying about the letter of the law or how it can be misinterpreted it's not the intent of the law.

The machine does this all the time.

I agree with the above. No matter how foolish Congress is, they are not going to kill the recreational boating/fishing industry, which is what this bill will do if not modified. Some emergency action will be taken at the last minute and then Congress will claim to be our heroes rather than a bunch of buffoons that should never have let this legislation happen in the first place. Watching Congress would be the best comedy available if it did not affect our wallets so much....

Everyone is hoping and saying that "Congress" will take some form of action before the new law takes effect. Not likely......members of congress are not elected because thay are the best person to do the job, we elect members of congress based upon the "Lesser of all evils," The ones that will do the least amount of harm.

If you read the EPA ruling, even the weekend fisherman using a 12 "Lowes" Jon boat will need a permit to cover rain water and spray run off.

I fear it is too late and if S.2766 and the house bills are not passed by the end of the summer, it means that the bills will die and we will have to start all over again after the elections in 2009.

So if you think Congress is capable of doing what is right, you are living in fantasy land.

If you are concerned and would like to take an active role in the matter it is real easy.

Follow this link to the iboat thread were this discussion originated.

Half way down the second page of this iboats thread is a link (it is in big red, bold text, can't miss it) to the official organization set up to fight this bill.

Yep, I followed the boatblue website and actually got a response back from my senator. He is in favor of passing it so that it does not include recreational boaters. Pass this boatblue website along to as many boaters as possible. I have posted several flyers throughout the campgrounds and docks at my local lakes. ......SS
