I picked up a 16' SS from a fellow iboater and I am planning on replacing the floor and was trying to decide what to use to cover it. Most guys use carpet and some have used paint with sand added for traction. I am out checking prices for wood and I am wondering if anyone has ever used Rustolium epoxy garage floor system? They have it on sale and should be enough to cover the floor top and bottom as well as the edges. I plan on storing it in a garage when not in use but wonder how it would be effected by UV light. If I did it I would leave it grey and not add the flake.

Welcome to iBoats!

Lots of guys have asked that question on here. Rustoleum sales reps have advised that their Garage floor epoxy paint is NOT for marine/boat use and advise AGAINST it's use for this purpose.

I wonder why they don't recommend it, since it is advertised to repel water, gasoline, and other chemicals. I would think that it would be slippery but I was thinking of adding the fine grain sand to add a non-slip texture.

They probably don't recommend it due to UV concerns. I am only speculating of course.

maybe the reason is flexability . concrete is solid ,decks are not , but i know who knows . try calling the manufacture it is better then asking a bunh of quessers like myself. by the way ther are alot of products out there that are available for marine purposes , incase they nay ther product for your purpose. will look for something if you need me to

NO UV protection, Low Quality Epoxy resin, Not rated for HIGH exposure to Moisture which could create adhesion problems. It also has a HORRENDOUS odor issue. But........ It is your boat so if you want to give it a go, "Git er DUN" I just can NOT recommend it.

I sprayed my truck bed with Herculiner. Easy to spray with the included spray gun and dries to a pebbled rubber finish. It is reasonably non-slip when wet and very resistant to the elements. Also comes in different colors. You may want to look into whether it would work on a boat.

I would prefer to do it right the first time. That is why I asked, everyone here is very knowledgeable and got the answers I need.

I have used it in my old Jeep Wrangler and liked the results but it would give the wrong texture for me.

Re: Epoxy Floor paint ?'s

I've found that a great way to save money on paint for applications like the floor and bilge is to use Sherwin-Williams' stuff.

They sell (at every S-W store) a pre-catalyzed water based epoxy that works very well on fiberglass, but according to them is not meant for submersion.

They also sell a more expensive ($60 a gallon) two part epoxy based paint called Tile Clad, which is shiny, thick film stuff that is used for jobs like coating the inside of water tanks. Stinks like nobody's business too. But, it's insanely tough.

I'm using the stuff for my bilge at the moment. Last year I painted the outside of my front door with some extra of the water based stuff, and it's still shiny white and scratch free.

Well, Let's hope your boat is NEVER submersed!!!! Most of our boats are Pampered so I doubt that it will meet conditions to make it fail. What about UV??

Keep us posted on how that paint holds up in the bilge.

I'm still a big can of good old Rusoleum Industrial Premium. Takes a little longer to FULLY cure but when it does, it has held up nicely for me, easy to touch up when there is a problem, Readily available, Priced Right.

Not much to find fault with there.

I'm just sayin...?

Do you have any pictures of the final result?

i used sherman williams micropoxy 646 (two part ) marine mill white and am very pleased...it is rated for submersion..it was 46$ for the epoxy (1 gallon) and 46$ for the hardener (0ne gallon )130.jpgi also did a test piece of scrap marine grade 1/2 " and let it cure for 10 days then beat it up with a hammer and it seems pretty durable...like a football helmet...though i did thin it out a bit to roll easier...i read an article on this site about thinning epoxy and the downfall of so....it supposedly reduces strength by 35% ...who new lol... i didnt see the thread till i was already done too late now...good luck

seeing this post is great as I too am looking for something for bilge coat and storage areas. I'm using epoxy and was wondering what would be best for epoxy adhesion.

Re: Epoxy Floor paint ?'s

Asking what is the best deck coating/covering is like asking what the best topside paint is. There are many different products across many different price ranges. It's a personal choice. Low range pricewise would be a good enamel paint. Mid range price puts you into two-part paints. Higher end could be a fancier floor coating/covering system (i.e. kiwigrip, gatorgrip, decco dot, etc.) or a combo of several of the above (i.e. paint followed by a vinyl floor covering).

Feel free to check out my resto thread to see my deck. I used Rustoleum Marine Topside Enamel. It's cheap, fairly durable and easy to fix up.

That looks really good! That is want I am looking for instead of carpet. Guess I will have to make a trip to SW. I might even be able to get a deal thru a friend of the family.

Keep the pictures coming.

Sure.

Putting its qualifications a different way, Tile Clad is usually what's used to coat the inside (and sometimes outside) of city water towers. So it stays intact for years of water submersion.

Here's the list of uses for the stuff from S-W. Note that you can paint bridges with it, so I assume UV isn't an issue.

  • Marine applications
  • Manufacturing plants
  • Structural steel
  • Pulp and paper mills
  • Storage tank exteriors
  • Pharmaceutical facilities
  • Nuclear power facilities
  • Clean rooms
  • Food processing facilities
  • Bridges
  • Wastewater treatment facilities
  • Suitable for use in USDA inspected facilities
Conforms to AWWA D102-03 OCS #5 Acceptable for general purpose use on floors. Acceptable for use in high performance architectural applications.

Woodonglass hit it on the nose I used it in my 1961 Elgin Resto it looks good
except where the water sat after hosing it out and storing it on unlevel ground
in those areas it has turned a greyish color and started to peel up. I will not use it again.
