Epoxy is stronger and bonds better than poly. I find it easier to mix and use than poly and very little odor. Down side is it is more expensive. I just finished a deck replacement and used epoxy for the first time and I don't think I would go back to poly.

If you are patching polyester resin you can probably just use polyester resin. Its less expensive and cures faster so you can put multiple layers on in 1 aftenoon. If you are working with wood and polyester I would go with epoxy. When working with wood epoxy bonds better to wood than polyester. Epoxy is also more flexible than polyester which is another reason it works better with wood. Boats are usually built out of polyester resin because it has adequate moisture impermeability, is less expensive, and easier to work with in production lines. High end composites for boats, race cars, and airplanes are usually made out of epoxy because it is stronger and has a higher bond strength.

It's a repair of a split outside corner edge of a polyester layup I did about 11 years ago. I'm not sure why it split on that particular edge but I want to fix it for good.

Can you get to the backside of the damage? Usually patch failures occur because there wasn't a large enough bonding surface and/or there wasn't enough glass across the damaged area. The resin is just used as a substrate and bonding agent for the glass which has the strength. That's why cracks reappear if you just fill them in with resin, particularly if the original glass beneath them has fractured. Small dings can be repaired with epoxy and glass filler, but if its bigger and or the underlying glass has broken you really want to glass the backside for strength and then fill the topside with filler for cosmetics.

Don't forget that once you choose epoxy, you're stuck with it till you die... Epoxy will bond to poly but you can't do a poly repair or addition to epoxy.
