Epoxying flywheel magnets

Ahoy, gents.

Bought a used boat with an '85 Johnson 175, supposedly only 20hrs. on a rebuild, new stator and CDI(?). I'll pay someone to do it, but how reliable is epoxying the magnets back on? Is it good as new, better than new, or a band-aid fix that buys you a handful of years? The previous owner wasn't comfortable "gluing" the magnets back onto the flywheel on putting it on top of the brand new stator. He figured that it'd have to be a brand new flyhweel. I've had it done on an '88 Johnson 200 and the boatyard made it seem like a reasonably permanent repair.

THX

hello
the mag kits are about 11 dollars or so and come with a glue kit. I have also used JB weld. the key is in the surface prep. the originals were glued on. its a bandaid when new.
good luck and keep posting but if you reglue them pay attention to the polarity of the mags :)

Like Rodbolt sez, the trick is in the metal prep. Do not degrease with solvent. Wash with hot, soapy (Dawn) water, rinse with hot water and dry throughly.

c/6
Hooty

Don't use compressed air when drying ( just incase you think it is faster) There is a chance of oil from the compressor coming out of the tank and contaminating your nice clean surface!

hello
I use acetone and rubber gloves and paper towels, not shop rags, when final prepping. also carefully inspect the flywheel taper. sometimes lapping the tapers is required. make sure you wipe all the oil from the tapers as well

You will see an angled notch in one corner of each magnet. Just make sure it is facing you when installed.

Bead blasting the steel mouning ring is the best way to insure a good bond with the expoxy. I have some still doing fine in salt water after 6 years. Shoot a bit of Rustoleum black paint on the magnets and inside of the flywheel if you run in saltwater. Don't get any on the cranksaft taper area.

when I need compressed air for drying or cleaning, I use a scuba tank, regulator and an air gun attached to the hose for the BCD. No danger of oil anymore.
