I have a 1991 nitro with a 115 evenrude, runs good, cranks good and idles good, the problem is as you trim the motor the idle from trim down goes from 750 rpms to about 1600 rpms with boat sitting still in neutral..Causes a problem loading on the trailer because you have to keep motor trimed up when loading to keep from hitting bottom with prop.then motor is idling 1600 and i dont like to put in gear when idleing that high.if i lower idle it wont run when trimed down. What makes it idle up when i trim the motor??

Re: eratic idling

Can you give some more information about the motor? Year? Model? ect. But from what you have stated so far, it sounds like a throttle cable may be getting pulled or pushed by another component either at the powerhead or at the control box.

Re: eratic idling

Just a shot in the dark, but I wonder if the trunion on the cable end (where it goes into the cowling) is properly held in place at the engine. If need be post a photo of that area and it'll be easy to see.

Re: eratic idling

If it was my motor, I'd check the carb float levels and the fuel recirculation system on it.

I’m experiencing the same thing. Carbs are fully closed and at idle I’m at 2,000 rpm. 1991 Evenrude,115hp, v4, VRO. Carbs have been redone, fuel system redone. Idle timing at +4 of TDC. Carbs have no idle adjustment screws.
Any ideas?
