I have a lowrance depthfinder. Some times it works fine, and sometimes it shows way way too deep. Where is the sender unit? does it need service? I have checked all connections at gauge.

A short in the wire leading to the transducer, or voltage fluctuation in power supply can cause symptoms like this.

Skicat
I seen a lot of units that will do this as you pick up speed and also the screen will become black with returns. In this case turning down the sensitivity while under way will help. Turn it down until the screen clears up with Just a bottom signal. Also try turning up the surface clutter control.

Also the older units would do the same thing in shallow water. Lowrance fixed the shallow water problem in later units.

It is from a 2000 Celebrity and is lowrance model 3500. I cannot find any way to adjust it. A friend says that these models are all adjusted automatically by a computer chip.

Skicat
Sorry I did not know it is just a digital depth sounder. I think your only hope is to check the 192 khz transducer and make sure it is pointed straight down or up to 2 degrees foward. Also make sure transducer is in green water and it is below the hull at least 1/2 inch on the deep side of the hull.

If it is a shoot thru hull make sure it has not come loose. Manual suggest a 192khz 8 degree transducer.

Re: erratic depthfinder

If its an in-hull and it has broken loose it won't show absurdly deep readings, it will show either absurdly low readings or no reading at all.

I'm not entirely sure about this but I believe that those depth only units don't actually adjust themselves to anything. They just shoot their highest power (which I believe is generally only around 50 watts) all the time and have what would otherwise be called their gain (sensitivity to incomming signals) turned up all the time. So, they are pretty simple units but with their lack of sophisticated circuity comes a good degree of reliability. Simply put there isn't a whole lot in there to break. So I'd also guess that its the transducer or the cable. If you don't know where the transducer is its not likely that you've misadjusted it. Just follow the two cables that will come out of the back of the unit. One of them will go to your power supply, so that's not it. The other one will go to the transducer (sensor). It may be glued down inside the hull somewhere, it may actually go through the hull with its face on the outside and a small part that looks like a section of small pipe with a nut on the end on the inside of the hull, or it may lead you over the back of the boat to a thing that is screwed to the bottom of the transom. One way or another its on the end of that wire and its probably bad.

Thom

Re: erratic depthfinder

I found that my transducer had broken away from the inside of my hull. I have carefully cleaned both the transducer and the hull. What type glue should I use?

If you are gong to glue it down in the same spot just clean up the old mounting with acetone and then glue it down with 5-minute epoxy. Make sure you get full coverage over the face of the transducer so that there are no air bubbles between its face and the hull bottom.
