Re: erratic depthfinder
If its an in-hull and it has broken loose it won't show absurdly deep readings, it will show either absurdly low readings or no reading at all.

I'm not entirely sure about this but I believe that those depth only units don't actually adjust themselves to anything. They just shoot their highest power (which I believe is generally only around 50 watts) all the time and have what would otherwise be called their gain (sensitivity to incomming signals) turned up all the time. So, they are pretty simple units but with their lack of sophisticated circuity comes a good degree of reliability. Simply put there isn't a whole lot in there to break. So I'd also guess that its the transducer or the cable. If you don't know where the transducer is its not likely that you've misadjusted it. Just follow the two cables that will come out of the back of the unit. One of them will go to your power supply, so that's not it. The other one will go to the transducer (sensor). It may be glued down inside the hull somewhere, it may actually go through the hull with its face on the outside and a small part that looks like a section of small pipe with a nut on the end on the inside of the hull, or it may lead you over the back of the boat to a thing that is screwed to the bottom of the transom. One way or another its on the end of that wire and its probably bad.

Thom
