Erratic performance

A guy I have been working with has a 1978 50hp Evinrude that runs slowly when put into gear and then suddenly revs up and takes off.<br /><br />any ideas?

Sounds like a bad powerpack. Pull the plug wires and check for spark. Should be bright blue and jump a good 7/16- 1/2 inch. If you have a weak yellow spark I would check and clean the connection to the engine and if that didn't do it then replace that powerpack.

Do a thorough carburator tear down and clean and some new spark plugs before you start replacing any electronics.
